Dehydration causes a salty taste in the mouth because if a person is not hydrated, salt in his saliva becomes more concentrated, leading to a salty taste. Dry mouth and a few medications causing dry mouth cause a salty or metallic taste due to impairment in a salivary gland. Also, postnasal drip, pregnancy rhinitis, GERD and neurological disorders cause salty taste.
